Lays out the basic framework and procedures of our gov’t 3. Sets out the limits within which the gov’t must operate. Parts of the Constitution 1. Preamble 2. Articles (7) 3. Amendments (27) Layout of the Constitution - Article I - Deals with the Legislative Branch - Article II - Deals with the Executive Branch - Article III - Deals with the Judicial Branch - Article IV - Deals with relations between the federal government and the states - Also deals with the relation between the individual states - Article V - Lays out the process for amending the Constitution - Article VI - A catch-all article that deals with 3 things: - national debts, states that the US Constitution is the “law of the land” (supremacy clause), oaths of office - Article VII - Lays out the procedure for ratifying the Constitution Basic Principles - Popular Sovereignty - Limited Government - Separation of Powers - Checks and Balances - Judicial Review - Federalism
