Dear family, October 18, 1653 For the past four years, I have been living in the French colony Quebec, and have regretted it ever since. The weather [and climate] is harsh and cold, my bones shivering and creaking like a ship under fire. Despite the cold, the Indians that we trade with act as if it were summer, showing not even a single clatter of teeth. The soil is brittle and rocky, making farming more difficult than ever, and all there is to trade is fur, for there is little to no gold to find. I also think that cousin Larry got eaten by a bear. But, in the cold and unrelenting land lies great beauty. There are thousands upon thousands of freshwater rivers, and there is forest as far as the eye can see. And if you go high in the mountains, you can watch the set of the winter sun, and see the sky turn from pink to purple, purple to night. The sounds of nature run through the woods, and is very peaceful, and can bring frozen tears to the eyes. However, in the night there lies danger. While the bears and lions sleep, the wolves of
