American Civil War: Cause and Effect By Jacob Mitchell Soloman The American Civil War was, you guessed it, a civil war in America. Specifically, it was one of the worst, but also one of the most necessary wars America has ever been involved in. It was a legendarily bloody war that started on April 12, 1861, and ended on May 9, 1865. While everyone knows about the hand slavery had in starting the Civil War, most people fail to see all the reasons behind it. Despite popular belief, slavery was in fact not the sole reason for the American Civil War. There were multiple causes to the tension and war between the northern and southern parts of the US back then, not just slavery, like the tariffs forced upon the South, the expansion to the west, and the attempted secession of the South. One main reason why the North and South went to war was because of the absurdly high tariffs put on foreign materials. Tariffs are taxes (or a tax) put on foreign/imported goods. The initiation of tariffs in the South by the North caused some serious difference in opinion. The North wanted to protect the interest of the northern industries and manufacturing companies, so they had tariffs initiated back in the time of the founding fathers. But at this point in time, the North had started using these protective tariffs to exploit the the southerners. The South provided the North with raw materials like cotton, rice, tobacco, sugar, and indigo, which the North payed for with no taxation on the products.
