PHIL 2075 Libertarianism: -idea is whatever a person wants do, is nobody’s business but there’s. -the government should not interfere with this in any way. -against the idea of any government involvement -origins; social contract theory -(Hobbs and Locke) -Hobbs; didn’t agreed with the king’s legitimacy, people believed him as king, because he agreed with what people wanted -thinks the idea of the only thing worse about the government is not having one -without a state or government all there is a state of nature (people getting whatever they want from nature) he describes this as a war of all against all. -life is solitary, poor, nasty, brutal, and short is described life without a government (state of nature) -state of nature = government-less (humans behaving like animals) -people agreed to have some security ex; hiring a sheriff -The sheriff only protects but that’s all he gets to do, otherwise he is “interfering” - ex Libya ( government: really bad, no government: even worse, country is a war- zone)
