February 11, 2008 The Gospel of Luke I. Review A. Reasons for Emphasizing Similarities and Differences 1. Both are present 2. Similarities are extensive with the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, mark, and Luke) a. the sequence, stories they tell, and even the wording b. reason they are so much alike is because someone is copying c. similarities indicate similarity of sources 3. Differences are key in understanding the Gospels a. books are different from one another b. to understand stories, you have to see how they are changing the source B. Methods for Studying the Gospels 1. Literary-Historical Method a. done with Mark b. identifying the genre (type of literature) and its context; how this genre fits in its historical context 2. Redaction Criticism a. Compare first source to latter source and look at changes, omissions and additions b. Called redaction criticism because redactor means editor c. Mark did not change Matthew 3. Comparative Criticism a. The theory i. Like redaction criticism, but different in a sense that you do not
