War and National Security 29/11/2007 12:04:00 From Vietnam to the War on Terror, Framing America’s enemies in the Global  News Arena Historically, war presents journalism with conflict between national  patriotism and professional truth telling, with the national perspective  predominating The enemy: real and constructed     Vietnam revisited The enemy as communism Viet Minh become the Viet Cong, gooks (first step is changing the language  used to describe the new enemy) The convenient enemy: the POW/MIA myth (no evidence that there are still  prisoners in Vietnam) o Nixon cultivated this myth; needed a better reason for the American  people to side against Vietnam Case of Vietnam and John Kerry     It’s not about the Swift Boat Kerry and Vietnam Vets against the war (assume that soldiers loyalty does  not allow them to criticize behavior)
