a. Briefly summarize your chosen boundary. What is the current status of the control variables for the boundary you choose (high risk, increasing risk, safe, not yet quantified). Describe what this status means. (150 words) I choose biogeochemical flows, which mainly focuses on the humans’ influence on the flow of Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) between physical environment and biosphere. A large amount of N and P are extracted from their original flow cycle to synthesize fertilizers. As the fertilizers are applied to the soil, the level of N and P in the soil and nearby water source has risen significantly, which disturbs their original flow in the biosphere. The current status shows the level of both P and N flows are under high risk. According to Steffen, in 2015, the annually mined P and N have excessed the planetary boundary (6.2 Tg/yr and 62 N Tg/yr separately) significantly, with approximately 14 Tg/yr and 150Tg/yr. That means the artificially released or fixed sufficient P and N has caused the critical impacts on the biosphere.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
