MATH 1414 Section 1.3 Complex Numbers A complex number can be written in the form a + bi . The i comes from solving the equation which results in , the imaginary number. Complex numbers therefore have two parts separated by addition or subtraction; a real part, a , and an imaginary part, bi . When doing operations on these numbers the results should always be in a + bi form. The name imaginary" is actual misleading. Imaginary numbers are very applicable. They may be used to describe objects with two numeric quantities, such as velocity and height. However they are more importantly used to describe the motion of electrons. Without this understanding of the nature of electrons, we would not be able to enjoy things such as smartphones, and tablet computers.
