Is it clear to everybody how the company intends to innovate? 4. Does creativity or bureaucracy crowd out innovation? 5. What are the reasons, if any, for why innovation is not as effective as you want it to be? 6. How does your company leverage its internal talent and its access to external talent? 7. How do performance measures and rewards affect innovation? 8. What are the constraints or barriers to innovation? 9. How do you leverage various outside constituencies in innovation? 10. How do you keep your employees focused on innovation? 11. Do you have a certain team of people who meet to discuss innovation? 12. Do you find your competition to be on the same level as your company as far as being innovative? Introduction An interview with John Sartori who runs the East Coast operations and marketing as well as William Schmidel who is the president of global trade for Sims Metal Management a metal recycling company was conducted. The interview took about 45 minutes in their North Haven, CT office. The topic of innovation was discussed as well as the above questions. Additional analysis of the responses is reported and how they relate to best practices as well as recommendations based on the current process and best practices. Summary of Answers Innovation is a process of bringing new ideas and making use of them to add value to a company. Effective innovation in a company must be managed well by respective authorities

In order to support innovation, management has to organize some procedures including reviewing the organizational structure, implementing management system access, consulting experienced companies, providing research on innovation, creating teams to work on ideas, and keeping employees motivated. Sims being the largest metal recycling company in the world evaluates innovation regularly but there is some resistance throughout parts of the business.
