Midterm Exam Review Sheet -- ENG 266 You are only responsible for the texts from Whitman forward, not for any of the pre-1865 texts used for comparative purposes, i.e., Bradstreet, Irving, Franklin, Wheatley. I. You should be able to define the following literary terms, and/or if I provide an example of one, you should be able to identify it. Allusion Stanza Satire Understatement Colloquialism Tone Dialect Assonance Diction Consonance Elegy End-stopped line Irony – situational, dramatic, and verbal Metaphor Persona Enjambment Sentimentalism Literary Modes or Forms: you should be able to define/recognize the main characteristics of these forms, and in cases where I have supplied them, you should also be familiar with the social/cultural forces influencing their development. Romance Psychological Realism Realism Naturalism II. There will be 10-12 quotations (sentences, phrases, important single words) taken from the texts we have read so far. These quotations will all be derived from passages we have discussed in class. I will ask you to identify the text by title and author. I may also ask you to comment on the significance of 2-3 of quotes of your choice. In other words, I am asking what key theme or issue the quote exemplifies—not just what is physically going on in the quote. III. There will be 2-3 short essay questions, answerable in 1-2 paragraphs.
