Nursing Care Model The American Nurses Association defines “Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations (nursing world).” Many nurses hold different roles within their patient heath care. There are various nursing models that can be implemented within the health care system today. Nursing care models provide the infrastructure for organizing and delivering care to patients and families (omicsgroup). Some of these methods to provide adequate care are total patient care, functional nursing, team nursing, primary nursing, complementary models, case management models, synergy models, and many new models. Total patient care is where one nurse is primarily responsible for one individual patient. Functional nursing involves each staff member being assigned a specific task for all patients. Team nursing consists of multiple nurses and staff members caring for a group of patients at once. Primary nursing includes a primary nurse that is responsible for the patient and an associate nurse that assists the primary nurse. Complementary models include cross-training. This approach lets staff perform different tasks as needed to fulfill the many different patient needs. The case management model is a model that focuses on an RN coordinating the care of a patient with complex health problems. Synergy models involves the nurse’s skills being matched with the patient’s needs. Many new models are constantly being developed to effectively treat patients with
