The Female Athlete Triad Title IX -1972 -In 2002, NCAA estimated there were 155,513 women competing in college athletics Positive Social Benefits -Decrease teen pregnancy -Decrease substance and alcohol abuse -Increase graduation rates -Teamwork, cooperation, goal setting and acceptance Physiological Benefits -Muscular strength and power increase -Cardiovascular benefits -Positive changes in body composition Female Athlete Triad -Possible adverse consequences made up of 3 distinct yet interrelated disorders: 1. Disordered eating 2. Amenorrhea 3. Osteoporosis Disordered Eating -Higher risk of developing disordered eating in sports that emphasize leanness -Ballet, gymnastics, swimming/diving Anorexia Nervosa -Refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height -Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight. -Disturbance in the way in which one's body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight. -In postmenarcheal females, amenorrhea, i.e., the absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles. -May involve episodes of restriction or binging and purging Bulimia Nervosa -Recurrent episodes of binge eating. -A sense of lack of control over eating during the episode -Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behavior in order to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting; misuse of laxatives, diuretics, enemas, or other medications (purging); fasting; or excessive exercise (non-purging). -The binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviors both occur, on average, at least twice a week for 3 months. -Self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight.
