System- a collection of programs and data that helps the computer carry out its basic operating tasks. Includes Operating system, Gui Productivity- like word processing software, spreadsheets, presentation graphics, database software, and personal information managers. Presentation-producing high quality presentations without a lot of training; Microsoft PowerPoint Spreadsheet-make calculations and perform numerical analyses; Microsoft excel, Apache Open office calc, Word processing- creating and editing documents for research; Microsoft word, Apache open office suite Applications- programs designed to make users more productive and/or assist them with personal tasks; like business software, media, and productivity. Open source- freely available for users to use as is or to change, improve, and redistribute; Linux, Apache office suite, and Mozilla.org , cost effective alternative to proprietary software Open group- UNIX Multi-user, multi-task OS used as a network OS with mainframes, it was developed in 1969 by Kim Thompson and Dennis Ritchie in AT&T's Bell Lab, it was originally non-proprietary, until it was licensed to the Santa Cruz Operation Group, it is now owned by the Open Group 2. What are the differences between software suites and individual software packages? A software suite is a collection several different programs that have been bundled together and sold as a single unit. You can choose to selectively install programs from the suite. An example is Microsoft Office, which contains the programs Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook. 3. What is the purpose for each of the following software? Database- storage and organize data Personal information manager- helps manage email, contacts, calendars, and tasks in one place. Outlook Presentation- produce high quality presentations Spreadsheet- lets you make calculations and perform numerical analyses; Microsoft Excel and Apache OpenOffice Calc
