Alex Van Bri Jex; Wednesday, 5:00 Dr. McGene 24 November 2017 Reflection Paper 2 Racial dominance and inequality have been a widely discussed issue throughout history. Recently, it has resurfaced into the political media as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada apologized for the abuse and “profound cultural loss” in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador at indigenous schools. Throughout Canada’s history, indigenous children were taken from their homes and families because there was a misguided belief that they could be better cared for, educated, and provided for. The apology was supplemented by the Canadian government settling a class-action lawsuit and will provide about 50 million Canadian dollars to about 900 former students of the schools. Trudeau was giving a tearful speech, saying that it was time for Canada to acknowledge its history as being flawed, imperfect, and unfinished. He apologized directly to Toby Obed, who was a former student at the schools, and also spearheaded the class-action lawsuit. He realized the repercussions and damage the indigenous schools have done to the people of native lands, and acknowledged this in his apology. According to C. Wright Mills’ sociological imagination in the Conley textbook, the social structure in the situation consists of indigenous Native Indians who were subjugated to racist and ethnocentric attitudes in which the white-Canadian people believed that their culture was superior to that of the indigenous people, thus, creating schools to force them to assimilate to white culture. Matthew Desmond and Mustafa Emirbayer’s article on racial domination talks about interpersonal racism, in which, one makes implicit biases based on one’s ethnicity. Examples of interpersonal racism can be that we may speak slowly to Asian woman because we think she speaks poor English, or that we may ask to change seats if an Arab American man sits next to us on plane.
