Please note that while this guide is provided to help you study, questions about any topics covered by the text and in class can show up on the exam. Chapter 1 Overview, Health Determinants and Behavior Change How we approach health in this class – is health just absence of disease or more than that? o Health – absence of disease; body is in balance and able to maintain internal stability despite changing conditions Mortality versus morbidity o Morbidity ( 发病率 ) - Clinical term for disease, specifically the level of disease within a population. o Mortality ( 死亡率 )- term used in public health for deaths within a population The top 5 causes of death among all age groups in United States o Heart disease o Cancer o Chronic Lower Respiratory disease o Accident & Unintentional injuries o Stroke The top 5 causes of death among 15-24 year olds in United States o Accidents & Unintentional injuries o Suicide o Assault/Homicide o Cancer o Heart disease The 4 behaviors responsible for most suffering and death from chronic disease o Lack of Physical activity o Poor nutrition o Tobacco use o Excessive Alcohol use Average life expectancy in United States o 78.8 Determinants of health – what are they; 6 types – be able to identify o Biology/ Genetic o Individual Behavior o Social (Social environment/ economics) o Physical environment o Health services

BB H 119 Exam 1 Review Fall 2017 Conway Access Quality o Policy Health disparities – what are they and what are some reasons why they exist o Gaps in the rate and burden of disease and the access to and quality of care among various population groups (book definition) o A particular type of health difference closely linked with social, economic, and/or environmental disadvantage (Healthy People) Ambivalence – what is it? o There are pros and cons to staying the same and to changing Differences among: predisposing factor, enabling factor, reinforcing factor – be able to identify o Predisposing Factors: Anything that influences the likelihood that a person will decide to change current behavior. o Enabling Factors: Skills, supports or resources that make it possible or easier to achieve a desire behavior change. o Reinforcing Factors: Once a person starts making a change, reinforcing factors can be either: Positive— Things that reward effort to change Negative—Things that discourage or block change progress Basic features of models of behavior change: Transtheoretical model, health belief model, ecological model o
