COAST WATER SERVICES BOARD I. KEY ENTITY INFORMATION AND MANAGEMENT (a) Background information Coast Water Services Board (CWSB) is a State Corporation established in 2004 under the Water Act 2002 and is among the eight (8) water service boards (WSBs) in Kenya. CWSB covers six (6) Counties (83,040 km 2 ) namely Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Tana River and Lamu. The head office is located in Mombasa Town. According to the 2009 population census, about 3.3 million people reside within the Board’s area of jurisdiction (b) Principal Activities CWSB main mandate (as per the Water Act 2002) is to provide efficient and economical water and sanitation services to the residents of the Coast region. This is achieved through: Development and management of water and sanitation assets/infrastructure; Holding and/leasing of the assets to Water Service Providers (WSPs); Monitoring WSPs to ensure compliance and where necessary being the WSP of the last resort. To help achieve the core mandate, CWSB has licensed seven (7) WSPs as its agents in the water and sanitation services provision. The WSPs include Mombasa Water Supply and Sanitation Company (MOWASSCO); Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (MAWASCO); Kilifi-Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company (KIMAWASCO); Taita-Taveta-Voi Water and Sewerage Company (TAVEVO); Lamu Water and Sewerage Company (LAWASCO); Kwale Water and Sewerage Company (KWAWASCO); Tana River Water and Sewerage Company (TAWASCO). The WSPs cover the following areas (Table I .1):
