Birchwood Lane School – Database Proposal for System of Record Southern New Hampshire University IT 204 – Introduction to Data and Info Management Birchwood Lane School – Database Proposal for System of Record
Background Information Birchwood Lane Schools need to upgrade their current process for keeping a system of record, to meet state and federal requirements. The current records are recorded on paper and filed away. This process currently makes it harder to maintain organized data, slows down the time it takes to look up information. It also limits the number of people who can look at data and is very time-consuming. Project Objective The objective of this project is to create a new system of record that meets or exceeds the state and federal requirements. This objective can be done, by creating a web application with a database as the backend to store the data. This application will make it easy to organize, add new data, find old data and expand the application if needed in the future. This application should save time and money for the staff and the school, by increasing the efficiency of the administrators and instructors. The system needs to be able to store data for students, courses and instructors and their relationships with each other. Database Information The Database I have picked for this project is Microsoft SQL Server. The reason I have chosen Microsoft SQL Server is that it is extremely stable, they have great support for the product, it is scalable and reliable, and because of the education discount that Microsoft offers. Microsoft also has tools that make this process easier, which will help the staff to get going on the project. There are also some great tools from Red-gate that can also give you some additional benefits. You can seem more about the tools at their website . Things
I would highlight are SQL Prompt, SQL Compare, SQL Data Compare, SQL Doc, SQL Dependency Tracker and SQL Backup Pro. I have personally used all of these tools, and they are extremely helpful and make people more efficient. Another thought is finding a system that will already meet those requirements that you can purchase. Some software options I found that might work is below. Stars Campus Solution – It has LMS powered by Moodle, Instructor Grade Book, Student Academic Record Keeping, Student Portal and many other features. (Features, 2016) PraxiSchool – It has lots of features but keeps track to students, staff, and classes. Has lots of reporting features, student parent portal. (Practical & Powerful School Management Software, 2016) Below I will outline some information regarding Microsoft SQL Server. Data Size Limits Data Type Description bigint Integer (whole number) data from –2^63 (– 9,223,372,036,854,775,808) through 2^63–1 (9,223,372,036,854,775,807). Storage size is 8 bytes.
