D. Explain the normal functions of the skeletal, nervous, and muscular systems for a football player kicking a field goal. 1. Explain the basic process of movement for the musculoskeletal system. A football player kicks a football, the nervous system sends an impulse or message to the muscles of the legs, they must use the bones, joints, and muscles of the lower body. The tarsals, metatarsals and phalanges all make up the foot which meets the ball. The ankle is made up of tibia and tarsals form the ankle joint. The tibia and femur are the long bones of the lower leg. The leg muscles on the sides of the tibia, or shin bone. The calf is made up of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, which contract to extend and/or flex the ankle. The muscles on the front of the tibia, tibialis anterior, contract to keep the ankle stiff. By keeping the ankle stiff, it prevents injury.
