Running head: PORNOGRAPHY 1 Pornography and Its Effect on Healthy Sexuality Amanda L Perry Liberty University
PORNOGRAPHY 2 Abstract Healthy sexuality is a vital part of everyone’s life. It does not only involve sex relating to two partners, but being healthy sexually can encompass many things. One is keeping a mind clear of impure thoughts, which often leads to inappropriate behavior. Pornography is considered by many people to be an unhealthy form of sexuality. Pornography is still a taboo topic, and while it is more accepted today than it was twenty or thirty years ago, it still is a sensitive subject for most people. Pornography, like any addiction, can rapidly get out of hand and out of control. Pornography addiction is a severe addiction and can break apart marriages and ruin lives. Excessive pornography viewing often leads to wandering eyes, even outside of the privacy of home. Temptation is everywhere it seems, and pornography can add fuel to a fire of immoral activity in a short amount of time. This paper will discuss pornography, what it entails, the consequences of pornography addiction, and how counselors can remain sensitive to an issue that affects millions of people in our country.
PORNOGRAPHY 3 Pornography and Its Effect on Healthy Sexuality Pornography is material, may it be books, magazines, videos, or internet related images, that is sexually explicit in nature. Its sole purpose is to promote sexual arousal, and is viewed by both men and women. Pornography, in all forms, has grown to be a multi-billion-dollar business, and is more widely popular and accepted now than years ago. In 1997, during the internet’s inception, there were only 900 websites that contained pornography. Today, that number has grown to 2.5 million websites (Newstrom, 2016). Pornography is a business focused on promoting the subjection of women, and even men, for the sexual arousal and enjoyment of others. Pornography has always been a secret guilty pleasure for millions of people, but the difference is that nowadays, people do not mind talking about it. In some circles, it is accepted and encouraged. Pornography comes in many shapes and sizes, and it is multidimensional (Busby, 2017). There is a fetish for everyone and everyone can feel included in the broad selection of pornography that is available on the market. It has gone from what was once a male and female sharing sex, even intimacy in some feature films, to shocking, even perverse behavior in the actors and actresses involved in pornography. It seems that porn has gone from subtle to shock factor for most people to even enjoy it; the wilder the better. Porn has become a fluidly unidimensional business, with fewer and fewer inhibitions to be noted (Busby, 2017). Because of this, the approach to counseling those with pornography or sexual addiction should factor in the overwhelming availability and accessibility of pornography today.
