A631.3.3.RB - Feedback and Goals Setting goals is important. When individuals don’t know where they are going, they are more likely to either quit or work at a less efficient pace. Brown (2011) talks about the importance of feedback and goals to younger employees and how it becomes less important later in life. As individuals get further along in their career, they don’t have the same goals but they still need feedback. During my career as both a Marine Corps Officer and as Division President, I have been a big believer in goals and feedback. When I first take over as a leader, I take the time to learn the job and the job of my employees or Marines. I sit down with all employees/Marines and go over their job formally. I describe what is expected of them and what their goals in the short, medium, and long term periods are. This is followed up with follow on counselings (feedback) every six months.
