1 The Bomb and the Start of the Cold War I. The Bomb German physicist that warned the germans were creating a super bomb( Einstein). Roosevelt brought scientist to Manhattan( Manhattan project) which was the name of the group of physicist that worked together to create this atomic bomb. This group created the chain reaction for a bomb, under Robert Oppenheimer’s direction the first atomic bomb exploded in new mexico. Manhattan Project- Groups of physicists that worked on the atomic bomb Robert Oppenheimer physics professor @ Berkley “father of the atomic bomb” First atomic bomb was tested in 1945 Had no idea the extent of the effects of the bomb Power of 20,000 tons of TNT Skeptical as to whether or not they should use it Harry Truman took over presidency and wanted to end the war. Truman threatened that if they use the bomb it would make people respect America. Truman ordered the bomb be dropped if Japs didn’t surrender by August 3,1945. They did not surrender. August 6 th , the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. Waited a day or two, still not surrendered, august 9 th the second bomb was dropped on nagasaki. The emperor of japan finally took over and make a public appearance telling his people they're stopping. Treaty of surrender was signed in September. was trying to negotiate with the Soviet Union over the future of Europe Douglas MacArthur- general in charge of reconstructing and helping the Japanese rebuild their land and what had happened. American five-star general and Field Marshal of the Philippine Army About 35 million people died in WWII, US lost 400,000, soviets lost around 20 million. II. 2 Soviets resented the Americans’ refusal to treat the USSR as a legitimate part of the international community & delayed entry into World War II A. Breakdown of the wartime alliance Joseph Stalin: leader of the soviet union,communist. Mistrust bc the soviet systems and the democracy from the US and BRITS could not get along. The were trying to get the land was taken by Germany. Stalin wanted friendly(communist governments around them) countries around them. Stalin started out with hitler but once hitler crossed him, there was mistrust. United Nations: maintain dialogue between nations so that peace could be assured The soviets were expanding into Europe and converting the government's into communism. The Americans threatened that if they don’t stop that they are the ones with the atomic bomb. Stalin used harsh methods to install communism in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Czech… in the late 1940’s.
