Farrier Eng. 101 – 022 Date due by: 9/15/17 The Weight of Misused Appeals Shabana Mir wrote an article attempting to inform of the plight faced by Muslim- American women. Throughout the article, she argues that in terms of American identity, young Muslim women are beset by a perfect identity storm. The argument of Muslim American identity oppression on its own had great potential to show a different side that is not often considered. Shabana Mir’s argument about the effects stereotypes have on American Muslims had great promise. Nonetheless, the writer’s misuse of emotional appeals and word choice does not deliver an impactful argument. In the beginning of Mir’s argument, it starts off with a brief visual representation of what an undergraduate’s college-life is likely to be like; how life can be exciting, terrifying, and so on. The article starts off fairly light before going into how things are different for Muslim Americans. Shabana Mir states that adding Muslim identity and a post 9/11 nativist racism into the mix, makes growing up for Muslim American college students painful (702). By the same token, it is stated in the article, that even though college is supposed to be more diverse and welcoming, however, it is actually separated in an array of unequal groups.
