LIN101H5 Review and Practice: Phonetics 1 These practice exercises are based on readings and lecture on Phonetics 1. For HW1, you will need to be able to: Recognize and produce all English IPA consonant symbols (summarized in Table 2.12) Give the place of articulation, manner of articulation, and voicing for each symbol Give the IPA symbol for a consonant with a specified place of articulation, manner of articulation, and voicing Some corrections and clarifications on Table 2.12: [p, b, m] should be bilabial , not labial. Labial is a general term for bilabial and labiodental. Alveopalatal and Palatal are two different places of articulation (see p. 24) In this class, we will consider the manner of articulation for [l] to be ‘lateral liquid’ and [r] to be ‘retroflex liquid.’ Although [m, n, ŋ] are technically “nasal stops,” we will use the term “nasal” for the manner of articulation of these sounds in this class, and will use the term “stop” to refer to oral stops [p, t, k, b, d, g].

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
