MEDICAL ERRORS RELATED TO CPOE 2 Nurse’s today should have a working knowledge of nursing informatics and need to be able to perform most tasks while working with computer technology. There are many advantages in the advanced technologies that are available in patient care. One topic of interest that is of huge benefit to my practice is the use of electronic health records (EHR) and computerized physician order entry (CPOE). In 2004, President George W. Bush outlined a plan to make sure that Americans would have an electronic health record by 2014 (Sipes, 2016). This paper will discuss how CPOE positively impacts my current practice but there are also some negative aspects that will be noted as well. Informatics skills and knowledge use of nursing informatics will be delineated throughout the discussed topic of electronic health records. Lastly, in summarization of this topic, future recommendations of CPOE and EHR’s will be presented. According to Biddle (2016), the Affordable Care Act insists that all health-care facilities “maintain EHRs for quality, safety, and efficiency and these EHRs must demonstrate meaningful use” (p.12). It is an important necessity for nurse leaders to understand and are able to utilize information from EHR’s to provide meaningful use (Biddle, 2016). Meaningful use, are things such as patient’s length of stay, how many patients developed hospital-acquired infections, who has fallen during hospital stay, and who all are diabetics. The advanced practice nurse uses their informatics skills and knowledge in order to determine how data is organized within the EHR. The data and information can then be shared amongst other healthcare providers about the patient’s care. This topic was selected because computerized physician order entry (CPOE) has significantly decreased medical errors, but studies show that there are still medication errors being made even with the use of CPOE. CPOE was started in order to cut the ‘middle man’ out such as a unit clerk or the nurse, for putting orders and medication prescriptions into the

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
