Name University Course Tutor Date Major public health problems in the UAE Introduction The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a country that is made up of seven emirates namely Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm Al-Quwain and Sharjah. The discovery of oil in the UAE has led to a significant industrial and economic growth (1). Major projects have been undertaken in the UAE for instance the tallest building in the world; Burj Khalifa, the largest shopping mall in the world; Dubai Mall and the World – a man-made archipelago. Such projects are a testament to the industrial progress that has been made in the last decade or so. The population of UAE stands at over 8 million with 11 percent of the population being Emiratis while the others are expatriates. The diverse religious beliefs, educational levels and cultural practices pose a great challenge to the public health strategies of the UAE. There a number of public health problems and challenges that are found in the UAE; they include the cardiovascular diseases, injury, cancers and respiratory disorders amongst the many others. The essay will focus on the major public health problems of the UAE. The epidemiology of one of the public health problems of the UAE will also be discussed. Public health problems in the UAE

The evidence of the occurrences of the different health problems will be undertaken to be able to come up with the ranking of such health problems. Heath Authority (2014) noted that the health problems that are experienced in the UAE include infectious diseases such as parasitic diseases and Hepatitis C, B; injuries, trauma and poisons; behavioural and mental disorders such as anxiety disorders and suicide; digestive system problems such as duodenal and peptic ulcers; musculoskeletal diseases such as osteoporosis; anemia; cancers such as lymphoma, colon, prostate and breast cancers; respiratory diseases such as influenza, allergies and asthma; congenital anomalies as well as birth defects; nutritional, endocrine and metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes; and finally the cardiovascular diseases such as dyslipidemia, hypertension and heart diseases such as ischemic HD (MI). The five major health problems will be ranked with one (Grivna et al., 2012) being the problem that requires the highest priority while five (5) is that which requires the lowest priority amongst the five problems that are chosen. Public health problem 1: cardiovascular diseases UAE has witnessed a great deal of industrial and economic development since 1971. The effect of the development has been the increased affluence of the people of the UAE and the attendant shift from the traditional nomadic lifestyle to the more technology driven, modern and urban lifestyle. The new lifestyle that the people have adopted has greatly reduced the domestic, leisure time and occupational physical activities. The busier lifestyle that has been adopted by the people of the UAE has also led to the overconsumption of convenience foods that are poor in nutrients but are rich in energy.
