Lab 15: Chemical Equilibrium Purpose: The Purpose of this experiment is observe systems at equilibrium as well as to analyze the effects of different “stresses” on them. Discussion: The Purpose of the experiment was to study systems at equilibrium and observe how different stresses affect the system. Therefore, in order to achieve this experiment, a variety of chemical reactions were observed and recorded using chemical equations and color change observations. In part I of the experiment, a reaction between an iron (III) ion and thiocyanate anion was observed as it formed an iron (III) thiocyanate ion. The equation for the reaction can be written as Fe 3+ + SCN - ↔ FeSCN 2+ , in which case the two mostly colorless reactants formed a red product in order to reveal the presence of a soluble complex ion, FeSCN 2+ . Next, in order to observe the effects of the stress of temperature on a system, two samples were places under different temperature conditions. In one sample, heat was added to the same system so that the new equation became Fe 3+ + SCN - ↔ FeSCN 2+ + heat. The reaction was therefore exothermic since heat was added to the products so that the system would move toward the reactants in order to maintain equilibrium. A separate solution was cooled so as to observe how the amounts of product differ when put under the stress of temperature. The colder solution revealed a much darker and more intense red coloring while the heated solution portrayed a lighter red. The more
