Epicurus → Happines is the ultimate good (universal opinon of mankind). Happiness is pleasure; all things are done for the sake of the pleasant feelings associated with them pleAim : not the positive pursuit of pleasure; but rather the absence of pain (neutral state) -- inner tranquility (achieved through philosophical contemplation with society/friends) Happiness is Pleasure Claim (similar to plato and aristotle) - “Desire Happiness as an ends in itself, an all other things are desired as means for producing happiness” Fault of men in pursueing happiness Do not form right idea of happiness Do not use proper means to attain it What is Happiness? Pleasure is our first and kindred good, first starting point and we always go back to it (we make this feeling the rule by which to judge what is good) Epicurus claims - There are 2 self-imposed beliefs that contribute to making our lives unhappy or full of pain First - belief that we will be punished by the gods for out bad actions
