Chapter 14 student Western movement began during Jackson’s presidency Self Reliance --- Inspired westward movement In the west they would use all nutrients in the soil and move on Imperialism--- a policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, use of military force, or other means Population was doubling every 25 year Irish began immigrating to America because their potato crops failed and Ancient order of hibernians was a secret society in ireland made to fight landlords This also sparked Molly Maquires who was a society of irish coal miners Tammany Hall ---The Irish gained controle f the hall in new york because of immigration Germans had more material goods so they were better established Samuel Slater --- father of the factory system because he was offered work in Britain for mechanics but secretly brought it to America Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin and interchangeable parts (Having machines make each part uniform) “Buy American” and “Wear American” Elias Howe invented the sewing machine which boosted industrialization Workers were forced to work long hours for little money In 1820 a lot of the workers were children Woman made things and factory girls worked 6 days Beecher encouraged women to become teachers as men left the profession Corn was a popular product John Deere produced the steel plow and then it was replaced by the McCormick Reaper Lancaster Turnpike--- first long distnace paved road Cumberland Road--- (or national rode) Clermont--- first commercial steamboat made by Robert Fulton Erie Canal--- value of the land around the canal lowered and the prices of products because it was easier to get products their The Market Revolution--- expansion of the market place due to new roads and canals Chapter 14 book notes In 1850 the young american population was constantly on the move westward There was lots of disease in the west and women were often secluded Many westerns were self reliant (every man for himself) Land was exhausted very quickly Kentucky bluegrass was good for crops Fur trappers in 1820’s would use rendezvous system (they travel to mountains every year to trade their eastern goods for furs The fur trade almost caused the buffalo, beaver and sea otter into extinction through ecological imperialism Some people's appreciation for nature called national mystique inspired literature and paintings and a conservation movements George Catlin created Yellowstone National Park because he feared nature was not being preserved In 1860 there were 33 states America's population was doubling every 25 years Overpopulation cause smelly slums, rats and impure water Boston had the first sewer system in 1823
