What was the cause of the Metrolink accident and could it have been prevented? The incident which occurred on September 12, 2008 was the result of a troubled man named Robert Sanchez. Robert Sanchez neglected to obey safety procedures put into place and violated several company policies in regards to cell phone use while conducting the locomotive. In my opinion there was also a lack of involvement by Metrolink to be aware of the conditions onboard the train and left all operations in the hands of a man with a difficult and troubled personal life. While the accident could have been avoided at that point with the current regulations and safety standards in place the only person that could have changed the outcome ofthe collision was Robert Sanchez. Is the high cost of train control justified by the likely safety gains for passengers? Is the money spent to regulate railroad safety being spent in the most efficient way to reduce the risks of death and injury in society?
