2/21/08 Clar - What is urban about Egyptian society in the early Bronze Age (‘Old Kingdom’) o TERRITORIAL STATE – Egypt o Royal cemeteries – ceremonial centers; divine king – god (Horace during his life, at death the mortuary cult of the king is conducted at a temple/shrine/altar within his complex) – by the 3 rd dynasty, on the north side of gigantic temple (king zosur – monumentalized mustaba (?) form as superstructure of tomb; elaborated on temple complex for the mortuary cult…builds gigantic complex/walled enclosure – in a sense, a mortuary palace; epicenter of it is his monumental burial…large court/south court, sed festival courtyard, north and south palace - fake palaces, other fake buildings lining it – entire thing is fake, all built out of stone. Systematically reconstructed all the aspects of the palace ) – Civic Investment, important ritual center/community temple, conceptual art/architecture – compressed entire Egyptian landscape into microcosm; image
