TEST ORDER 2 Order to Draw for Testing After examining Mr. Jones, the physician orders the medical assistant to perform a venipuncture to obtain blood samples for ordered tests. His order reads, PT, CBC, Fasting Glucose and Total Cholesterol Level. Prothrombin time (PT) is a blood test that measures the time it takes for the liquid portion (plasma) of your blood to clot. A PT test can be used to check for bleeding, or whether medicine to prevent blood clots is working. Prothrombin time is an important test because it checks to see if five different blood clotting factors (factors I, II, V, VII, and X) are present. If any factor is missing, deficient, or defective, clotting time may be delayed. Blood that takes too long to clot in a PT test may be a sign of: a hereditary deficiency in clotting factors (such as in the bleeding disorders hemophilia and von Willebrand disease), liver disease (because most clotting factors are made in the liver), vitamin K deficiency, therapy using warfarin, a blood-thinning medication, and certain medical conditions in which the body uses up or destroys clotting factors too rapidly. For this test the blood sample will be drawn first in a light blue top and the tube must be filled 100%. No special preparation is needed for this test. Next to be drawn is the Total Cholesterol Level is used primarily to detect disorders of blood lipids and to evaluate the risk potential for atherosclerosis. High cholesterol levels often are a significant risk factor for heart disease. This test will be drawn second and the tube color is a red top. Generally, you're required to fast,

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
