STAT 1450 Recitation Activity 14 Name: _______________________ Two Proportions & Two Categorical Variables TA: ______________________ Date: ______________________ OBJECTIVES Students will conduct a hypothesis test for the difference between two population proportions. Students will construct a confidence interval for the difference between two proportions. Students will use JMP to conduct a test of significance for two categorical variables. Part I: Test of Significance for Two Proportions (Using a Two-Way Table) 1. Suppose that a random sample of 540 encounters involving an Aggressive Sales Approach were compared to a random sample of 460 involving the Passive Sales Approach. The data were summarized and presented in the following table. Result Approach Sal e No Sale Total Aggressiv e 280 260 540 Passive 305 155 460 Total 585 415 1000 2. Estimate the proportion of successful encounters (sales) for each approach. Paggresive = 280/540=.5185 Ppassive = 305/460=.663 3. The Vice-President of Sales has elicited your assistance in determining if there is a statistically significant difference (at =0.05) in the success rates (i.e., investigating the difference of p aggressive – p passive ). a) State the null & alternative hypotheses. b) Confirm that the large sample condition has been satisfied.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
