A final note on N EOPHENOGENESIS : Another example The monkeys of Koshimo island A population of Rhesus monkeys was brought on Koshimo island by the primatologist Itani in 1942 so that their social organization could be studied (the sea is nearby, but monkeys normally avoid water). These monkeys are provided with food on a daily basis (rice and potatoes). After a number of years on the island, a young female establishes a new habit: washing food at sea Generations later, monkeys are seen diving and swimming, an some are even seen catching fish A portion of the population naturally exhibits the "palmed-feet" mutation (normally lethal, now neutral in provisioned environment) The new relation established by this population of Rhesus moneys with the marine environment now acts as a "filter" (a canalizing factor) for future mutations o The mutations to be retained in the future will be those that provide support for the ancestral ontogenetic adaptation to the sea environment. Thus genetic change will appear to "mimic" the learned ancestral adaptations (i.e., genetic assimilation of an acquired character ).
