Autonomic nervous system Sympathetic nervous system is activated Fight or flight response activated Release of catecholamines (e.g. epinephrine) Parasympathetic nervous system suppressed Calm, vegetative activity suppressed 2. Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenocortical axis General adaptation syndrome Release of corticosteroids (e.g. cortisol) 2 Different Physiological Responses Threat: Demands are greater than resources Autonomic Response HPA Response Challenge: Resources are greater than demands Autonomic Response Are all stressors equal? (not “really”) Oversimplification HPA activation: Some types of short-term stressors lead to a larger cortisol response Uncontrollable stressors Threats to one’s self-esteem or social status It may be different for chronic stressors What does stress do to your body?
