MARS 1010: Coastal Processes 24/10/2007 11:12:00  There are two types of coasts: Primary Coasts: Erosion dominated by terrestrial processes at the land-air boundary. (e.g.  glaciers, rivers, isostatic sea level change, volcanoes, faults Fjords, estuaries, river deltas, cratered coasts, and such are examples of  primary coastlines.   Secondary Coasts: Marine processes dominate.  (e.g. wave-erosion) Barrier Islands, and sea cliffs are good examples of secondary coastline.   Cliffs are usually the sources of coastal sediments Mudballs are concretions that were part of the cliffs, but were too big to be  moved by wave action. Seastacks are also more resistant to erosion Than the rock/sediment originally  surrounding them. A sand  spit  formed by longshore transport as the sediment moves from the cliff  (in the distance), along the beach, towards the bay. If a spit reaches out to an island, it’s called a tombolo
