King 1 Brandon King Steve Lewis Writing 201-2 04/3/16 Gender Roles Are Harmful Gender is an arbitrary opinion that persuades humans to believe that gender is biological. However, gender is a concept used to organize human life; this assumption of gender specific roles promotes power to the dominant gender, creating an inferior gender. Society bases gender on sex, administering sex as a category for people. Through socialization propaganda, we are brainwashed into identifying specific behaviors as 'masculine' or 'feminine'. Forcing gender roles on people causes emotional and physical damage to every individual that follows their genders' requirements. First, I will assess the emotional abuse women put themselves through to conform to their strict gender role. Next, I will analyze The Guy Code and explain how gender construction is applied with physical suffering, pressured by masculinity. Then, I will discuss how being masculine is psychologically damaging to males who practice it. The evidence suggests men are harmed more than women by societal pressure to satisfy the cultural myth of gender. The message that gender roles send is, to be a part of society, you must fit in; however, women suffer emotionally through the effort of living up to these unattainable standards to satisfy their gender role. Swami explains "There are constant pressures from the world and society as to what a woman should be, what a woman should look like and how a woman should behave" (371). Men and the media have created this arbitrary definition of what the perfect woman is, encouraging women to police this idea of 'femininity' using peer pressure and social

At a young age, girls learn which behaviors are acceptable for their sex by observing other girls and grown up women; if they violate their gender role expectations they are looked down upon by their peers and rejected by other females.
