Political Science: Master Discussion Doc. 07/10/2007 15:43:00 Study Guide/Quiz Discussion notes. Socialism never took root in the U.S. because we are a nation of individuals;  racial, ethnic, and religious diversity cuts solidarity.  There is no aristocracy, and  equality of opportunity goes away from communist values.  Our focus on limited  government goes against a strong centrally planned economy.   Kingdons 5 Major Factors, that have affected the way americans think about the  proper role of Gov't Migration: People moved here to get away from unacceptable religious or  political status.  People migrated for economic reasons.  Some came against  their will.  Slavery induced many conflicts that have shaped our country. Diversity/Localism: Diversity cuts solidarity. Economic/Social structure: Capitalism Isoloation from other countries: We formed our own values, and were less  affected by our neighbors. Opportunity: The American focus on equality of opportunity. Path Dependence: Early events in American history started America down the  path of limited government, and subsequent events reinforced that direction and the  distinctive pattern lasts to the present.  5 Political Areas where we support big government Military/Defense. Education. Litigation.  Regulation: Social Regulation, Civil rights, Environmental legislation  Criminal Justice: More laws, high rates of incarceration.

Georgia has  replaced  its constitution 10 times, second only to Louisiana.   Ammended MANY times. Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of independence actually justifies the right to  secede.   Democratic Defects: Supreme courts have life appointments 3/4 th  of the states must agree to amend the constitution You can still win the presidency without the popular vote.   o Minority President. Every state is guaranteed equal representation in the senate regardless of  size.   GA amendment Process Governor has no formal role in the GA amendment process. Voters cannot petition for a constitutional amendment.  Proposal must pass both chambers by a 2/3 vote. Federalism:  Power is constitutionally divided between the states and the federal
