Lecture – January 19, 2017 The white slave trade Jack Johnson o African American Boxer in the old days (1910’s) o Boxing was huge sport MMA Today Slavery was gone but basically reconstructed under a different name 3 famous African Americans at the time o Jack Johnson o Booker T Washington o WEB Du Bois July 5 th , 1910 o As the papers report that Johnson beat a white guy and became the boxing champion, riots happened o Angry letters to Senators o Bureau of Investigation to arrest Jack Johnson Jack Johnson liked white women Not a slave, no one can tell me who I can and can’t likes Spend 2 years getting evidence for some crime Finally arrest him for violation of the Mann Act Flees country after an ex-girlfriend testifies against him and gets conviction Both of his women are prostitutes Mann Act applies to them IF HE PAYED FOR THEM – this is unlikely o Bureau of Investigation got a ton of positive press because of Johnson’s arrest Leads into the Roaring Twenties o BoI do a ton of arrests and a few prosecutions
