MARS 1010: Lecture 3 31/08/2007 10:14:00 High latitudes receive much less radiation that the lower latitudes.   An average of 4 times less radiation hits the poles in comparison with our  equator Despite this fact there is only a 50˚C temperature difference between the  poles.  Even so the net heat balance is negative in the high latitudes and  positive in the low latitudes.  That means that the higher latitudes lose more  heat than they receive in radiation and vis-a-versa for the lower latitudes. Convection:  Warm air from the land rises, and moves out over the ocean where  it meets cooler air, falls, and then blows onshore where it heats up again over land and  repeats the process. This same process occurs in scales as small as a dorm room with the radiator  on, and as large as our entire planet. o
