MARS 1010: Gases/Nutrients 02/11/2007 11:27:00 Most Abundant dissolved gases in seawater: Nitrogen: relatively inactive biologically  Oxygen: Very active biologically (photosynthesis and respiration) but it is not  very soluble Carbon Dioxide: very active biologically (photosynthesis and respiration) and  CO 2  is VERY soluble because of all the different forms it can take  Seawater gas concentrations are controlled by: Atmospheric concentrations o The ocean will try to equilibrate with the atmosphere Exchange Rates with the atmosphere o Wind speed, waves, turbulence Solubility: o Temperature, Salinity, Pressure Biology: o Photosynthesis, Respiration, Decomposition. Gases are more soluble at: Lower temperatures Lower salinity Higher pressure Consequences of this are: o Warmer waters more likely to have low O2 Polar surface waters and
