THE SIX BASIC PRINCIPLES OF A RETAIL MERCHANDISE PRESENTAION OR DISPLAY Plan Your Merchandise Presentation and Displays o Know what, where, when, and why about theme, special event, and merchandise itself. o Develop a plan including a timetable, organizational chart, and sketch to scale. o Coordinate interior store displays with window displays and / or “windows-on-the-aisle”. o Be aware of what is happening in your local community, country, and world. o Plan in advance based on previous year’s sales, promotions, and special events. o Keep a special events calendar. o Coordinate displays with advertising, special events, etc. Select Merchandise Thoughtfully o Keep abreast of the latest fashion trends, new market developments, and new merchandise and accessory trends. o Be sure there is enough backup stock to support the display. o Make sure sizes, styles, fabrications, and colors are compatible. o Prepare merchandise for display in advance – select, remove tickets, steam, brush, etc.
