General statement Tasks within supply chain Third-party logistics companies and services Why are 3PLs becoming more popular 1.1.2. Background to the trend One of the fastest growing business sectors in the supply chain What is it: 3PL: Outsourced Facilitates communication between the supplier and the freight services Includes freight forwarding, warehousing, inventory management, and distribution Warehouses: these can help store the goods and send them out when the supplier needs more inventory Freight transportation: train, truck, boat, plane Supply Chain Manager: someone who is hired by a company who is supposed to prevent events from happening that could create a delay of the product delivery. Outsourced Supply chain management software monitors the 3PL services and movement along the supply chain (2015). 1.1.3. Points you have selected to focus on There is a lot of competition within the 3PL sector DHL Worldwide Network, UPS, and FedEx are all battling for market share Amazon and Vendor Flex It is spreading globally High demand in China (2015). 3PL is necessary for companies to efficiently increase speed to market 1.1.4. Relevance: Efficient logistics services and supply chain management is integral to decrease miscommunication, improve speed to market and increase profit margin.
