DRAMA 2000 02/25/2008 Producer -in charge of the business end (budget, renting space, ticket sales, etc) Director -in charge of the artistic elements of the show (casting, spectacle, etc) Elia Kazan - Director of Death of a Salesman Probably “the director” of the 20 th century Director has to be: - Interpreter (what it is about, how it should be arranged, and how it should be put on stage) - Communicator (must communicate their interpretation to the rest of the people in the play and the audience) - Unifier (in the center of the collaboration. Must get everyone on the same page and working on the same vision) Ultimately the goal is to make a coherent, unified production. AS INTERPRETER: Three approaches to Directing a play: - Transmitter – produce the play to the letter and law of how it was written. Don’t change anything; make it the way the playwright intended for it to be in. You are simply “transmitting” it from the page to the stage. -
