TargetCompany Overview Target is one of the top retail chains in the United States and it continues to grow and expand every day. The history of Target can be dated all the way back to 1881 when George D Dayton purchased land on Nicollet avenue in Minneapolis and formed the original Dayton Dry Goods Company (Target1). His stores gained a reputation for dependable merchandise and a generous spirit of giving. Dayton remained president of the company until his death in 1938. After George D. Dayton’s death his son George N. Dayton took over as president and a few short years later in 1946 the company establishes an annual practice of 5% pretax profit given back to the community being only the second American company to establish a preset amount of annual giving (Target 1). In 1954, under the president Donald C. Dayton, the companycreates its first expansion outside of Minneapolis and is put in Rochester Minnesota as well as putting another location in the suburbs two years after.
