The End of Israel and the Book of Isaiah I. Historical Overview a. The Last Days of Israel(northern kingdom): Key Dates/Events i. The Fall of Israel 1. 745-727 BCE: Tiglath- Pilazer (=Pul) is King of Assyria and makes Israel (under King Menehem) a vassal state. 2. 735-732 BCE: Syro-Ephraimite War/rebellion against Assyria (King of Israel: Pekah) 3. 727 BCE: King Hoshea rebels against Assyria’s King Shalmaneser V 4. 721 BCE: Sargon II destroys Samaria (destruction of northern kingdom of Israel) – forced intermarriages so no Israelites left. Jerusalem grew in size substantially because of refugees b. Meanwhile, in Judah: Key Dates/Events i. Important Kings 1. Uzziah (Azariah) 783-738 BCE 2. Ahaz 745- 727 BCE 3. Hezekiah 727- 698 BCE ii. Important Events 1. 735-732 BCE Syro-Ephraimite War 2. 701 BCE Invasion of Sennacherib II. Isaiah of Jerusalem a. Favorite prophet, prophesied during time of fall of Israel b. Dates and Location i. Begins prophesying 738 BCE when king Uzziah died. ii. Until at least 701- invasion of Sennacherib. iii. Ministry lasted around 40 years iv. Prophesied in Jerusalem (southern kingdom), when northern kingdom was in trouble with Assyrians. c.
