COUSE DESCRIPTION This course introduces the student to basic biological principles necessary to understand biology. It begins with a study of the basic characteristics and organization of living things and lays the foundation in chemistry needed for an understanding of biological processes. From this background, the cell and its organization, behavior of chromosomes and foundation of genetic mechanisms, energetic relationships of photosynthetic and respiration, basic concepts of taxonomy and archaebacteria, eubacteria, protistians, fungi and lower plants will be studied.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES This course is a part of the general education requirements. The class is designed to provide: 1. General learning, by applying applications of biological concepts to problems in daily living. 2. Apply the scientific method to problems encountered in everyday life. 3. Identify the internal and external organelles of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and define the function of each. 4. Recognize energy pathways such as photosynthesis, respiration, and overall cellular metabolism 5. Describe the basic process of mitosis and meiosis, and how they are related to the life cycle of organisms. 6. Summarize the mechanisms of inheritance and the process by which protein and DNA are synthesized. 7. Understand the mechanisms of natural selection and their impact on evolution. 8. Describe the general properties and characteristics of the biological kingdoms. 9. To do critical thinking by applying application of biological concepts. 10. Apply the scientific method and the knowledge gained from the course to societal concerns. 11. Interpret simulations of biological systems and relate them to concrete applications.
