1 Genre Expository Paper In this paper I will define the form of poetry Villanelle. I will also give the history of how it came to, and who first created it. I will explain how it has turned from a loose structure to strict fixed structure, then finally to the form it is today which is a less strict structure. I will give some of the poets that have attempted this style of poetry. One of the being a very well known poem by Dylan Thomas. Following that I attempt this form myself. Villanelle, the word derives fr om Latin and Italian, Villanelle originated from the Italian villanella, referring to a rustic dance or song and which comes from villano. Villano comes from the Medieval Latin villanus, meaning peasant, slave or farmhand The etymology of the word relates to the fact that the form's initial distinguishing feature was the pastoral or rustic subject. The villanelle originated as a dance song with a loose to almost no structure in Italy and Spain. Before the nineteenth century, the term would have simply meant country song, a meaning it retains in the vocabulary of early music. The form became strict and was popular with English and French poets, and many contemporary poets. They have now begun to loosen up the structure of the villanelle to allow for variations and shifts in the form, although villanelle isn’t as popular as it once was.
