Study guide for Exam 1 (Chapters 1 – 5) Question list below is a compilation of topics we have covered so far. There is a lot of overlap with questions from “Main Concepts” slide after each chapter. Use these as a guide to study. Just memorizing answers to these questions is not enough. Be able to apply the information. 1) What are emergent properties? Know examples discussed. 2) What is reductionism? 3) Understand the process of scientific inquiry. Be able to identify experimental and control groups in a given experiment. 4) Know the different characteristics of covalent bonds, ionic bonds, hydrogen bonds, van der waals forces. 5) How do ions form? Give two examples of ions. 6) Know the number of valence electrons for C, H, O, N, S. Know how these atoms share electrons to form covalent bonds. Be sure to understand and remember that carbon is tetravalent. You may need to do some application questions based on this information. 7) Distinguish between polar covalent bonds and non-polar covalent bonds. 8) A covalent bond will be polar if the two participating atoms will have _?_ (similar or different) electronegativity values?
