According to Arcangelo, Peterson, Wilbur, & Reinhold (2013), pharmacokinetics focuses on what the body does to the drug while pharmacodynamics focuses on what the drug does to the body. The purpose of this discussion is to describe a patient scenario that has influenced the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic process and an altered anticipated reponse to a drug. The patient factors will be considered and discussed. Lastly a personalized patient care plan based on the influencing facitors will be explained. There have been multiple times that I have administered a drug and the desired outcome was not met or it had an exaggerated adverse effect. Working on a dementia unit, most of the patients I care for are elderly with a diagnosis of dementia. With the diagnosis of dementia there are many pathologic age-related brain changes that cause behaviors such as agitation, anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia (Arcangelo et al., 2017). In my facility the medical director will frequently administer the drug lorazepam for anxiety, agitation, or restlessness. This drug is a benzodiazepine and is used to elicit an anti-anxiety or sedative effect (University of Maryland, 2013). Case Miss. T is an eighty-year old patient that resides on the locked dementia unit. She has the diagnoses of dementia, hypertension, anxiety, agitation, and depression.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
