For every new product accepted in supermarkets, another product is discontinued o For every 10 introduced; 7 are discontinued (30% creep in sku= stock keeping unit Consumers demand new products Retailers have to change! Who is responsible for new products: o For startup companies anyone can develop an idea o For big companies, positions for New Product Development Why introduce new products (manufacturer motivations)? “me too” products are similar products with a slight change (line extensions)
